Mike Eruzione
We are proud to welcome Mike Eruzione, captain of the legendary 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team, as our keynote speaker. Best known for scoring the game-winning goal against the heavily favored Soviet Union during the unforgettable “Miracle on Ice,” Eruzione helped lead Team USA to one of the most celebrated victories in sports history.
The victory over the Soviet Union advanced the United States to the gold medal game, where the team defeated Finland to claim Olympic gold in Lake Placid, New York. More than four decades later, the team’s remarkable journey continues to inspire audiences with its enduring lessons about leadership, teamwork, determination, and believing that the impossible can be achieved.
Before joining the 1980 Olympic team, Eruzione competed on two U.S. National Teams and played professionally for the Toledo Goaldiggers of the International Hockey League. He received the league’s McKenzie Award as its outstanding American-born player. When he was selected for the Olympic team, his teammates chose him to serve as their captain—a role that would place him at the center of one of the most iconic moments in American sports.
The achievements of Eruzione and his teammates have continued to receive national recognition. The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, and Sports Illustrated named its victory the No. 1 Sports Moment of the 20th Century. In 2002, Eruzione and his teammates were given the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron during the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Their inspiring story was also brought to a new generation through the 2004 Disney film Miracle.
Today, Eruzione travels throughout the country as a motivational speaker, sharing the experiences and lessons behind the “Miracle on Ice.” His engaging presentations explore what it takes to bring individuals together as a team, lead under pressure, overcome overwhelming odds, and remain focused on a shared goal.
